A Spontaneous Florida Road Trip: Sun, Waves, and Memories

Florida — the Sunshine State — had been on our travel list for a long time. Although we had talked about it before, the timing just never worked out. Last year, I couldn't make it either. But one random day, after a casual conversation among friends, things clicked. Within just a few hours, we had locked in our plan and booked an Airbnb. When Florida calls, it's hard to ignore — and that's exactly what happened. Ten of us packed up for a trip full of sunshine, fun, and coastal vibes.

We hit the road early at 7 AM for our 313-mile journey (about a 4.5-hour drive). Our first stop was at Buc-ee’s in Alabama — a classic road trip pitstop. I forgot to pack sunscreen, so I had to buy it there, but it was expensive. Pro tip: get your essentials beforehand. For lunch, we stopped at Taste of India, an Indian buffet. As a South Asian, I found the flavorful and familiar food comforting. The buffet had a great variety, and it gave us the energy to power through the rest of the day.

Next, we went to Power Up Watersports, where we had reserved a boat for $250 (4 hours, 10 people — quite reasonable). The guide gave us two options: Go left for a peaceful ride

Go right for more action and crowd

We started left, which had small, quiet islands but nothing extraordinary. So we turned right — and that’s where the fun was. The atmosphere was lively, people were out, music was playing, and it was everything you'd imagine from a beach party scene. If you're planning a boat trip: Wear shorts and a windbreaker.

Don’t be like me — I showed up in jeans and still jumped into the water at Crab Island. No regrets though, the vibe was worth it!

Make sure to dock your boat properly. Ours drifted off at one point, and we were lucky my friend was nearby to steer it back.

We swam, clicked pictures during the sunset, and made beautiful memories.

Our Airbnb near Santa Rosa Beach was a beautiful three-story home, complete with: Board games

TVs in every room

A retro Pac-Man game station

We struggled a bit with food — most places weren’t on DoorDash, and there was some debate in the group. In the end, we settled on Michael’s Pizza, which turned out to be delicious (especially the vegetarian option!). That night, we laughed, ate, and some of us — including me — slept on bunk beds. It was my first time sleeping in one, and I actually enjoyed the top bunk experience. The next morning, we explored the neighborhood. Although there were bicycles in the garage, we couldn’t access them due to a password issue. So we walked instead — the community was peaceful, filled with people walking dogs and enjoying their mornings. We grabbed coffee at Beachy Bean, a cozy but slightly pricey café with amazing ambiance. I tried their avocado toast, but honestly, it didn’t quite live up to the hype. Still, it’s a nice spot to chill if you're around. ater, we visited The Track for some go-karting. The wooden track was a total blast — highly recommended. The outdoor silky track, though, was slippery and underwhelming. We had another round of Indian buffet before heading to the beach — this time, the iconic Opal Beach. Opal Beach had clean sand, rolling waves, and a $5 entry fee (which we got waived due to a special offer). While the waves were high and exciting, there weren’t any visible lifeguards — so I’d caution against going too deep if you're not a strong swimmer. After some sunset photos, splashing in the waves, and a refreshing beach shower, we wrapped up our beach time. The total trip cost was around $180 per person. You could definitely save a bit more if you skip extras like go-karts and stick to free or low-cost beach activities. But for us, the wooden go-karts were totally worth it. If you’re planning a Florida getaway, especially around Santa Rosa Beach, here’s what I recommend: Definitely include a boat trip to Crab Island

Try Michael’s Pizza

Skip pricey cafés unless you’re there for the vibe

Explore the local community — it’s peaceful and friendly

Watch out for strong waves and stay safe at the beach
